Sainte Croix du Mont is on the right bank of the Garone, next to Loupiac and facing Sauternes-Barsac. Eighty wine growers tend to some 450 hectares(1,100 acres) of vineyards, of which 80% are planted with the traditional variety, S‚millon, along with 15% Sauvignon and the remainder of Muscadelle. The presence of botrytis cinerea, the "noble rot", concentrates the must of the grapes, which are picked by hand late in the harvest season and in several stages. A classic Sainte-Croix is full and generous, almost buttery in texture at times, but in addition has an impressive structure which gives it a great potential for ageing. Similarly to Loupiac wines, Sainte-Croix du Mont wines are excellent value for money. For this reason, up to 80% of production is accounted for by the domestic market, although there is increasing demand for export. A Sainte-Croix can accompany a wide range of dishes, and is also a joy to savour with a good cigar.
